Pioneer Of The Wrench

There are different kinds of wrenches in nowadays society, such as pipe wrench, chain wrench, socket wrench, torque wrench, impact wrench, etc. The wrench basically includes notches at the mouth for gripping. The wrench is pulled at a right angle to the axes of the lever-action and the bolt or nut.

But do you know when is the first wrench patented? And who’s the pioneer of the wrench? Well, it all has to track back to 1835, about 200 years ago……

Although the idea of wrench typology is already exists in prehistoric age, it is wait till August 17, 1835, Solymon Merrick patented the first wrench. In short, Merrick’s patented idea was executed and issued years after.

After then, more and more wrenches were patented and issued. Interestingly, not only the mechanics are the only groups that applied for wrench patent. All walks of lives like steamboat firefighter or heavyweight boxing champion did too.
